DEFINITION, KEY FIGURES, CLARITY, DISCUSSION, ANALYSIS
Definition- Dred scott, was a slave who had lived with his master (residence in Missouri). he then for 5 years lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory, (free state and territory) he then sued for his freedom on the basis of his long residence on free soil. The Supreme Court ruled that because a slave was private property, he could be taken into any territory and legally held there in slavery.
Key Figures- Roger Taney, Dred Scott
Clarity of emphasis- it is in this list because the decision by the court said that slaves was property and because slaves were property they could be taken anywhere the owner pleased. congress also had no say in the fact of where slavery can and can not go
Discussion of its place in history- it was a test case that the north had pushed for that came to a head with Taney's decision that slaves were property and even though he had been living on "technically" free soil he still was a slave
Analysis of its impact in creating the civil war- lead to the civil war because with this ruling slavery could and to northerners would spread to wherever southern slave owners wanted it to and would upset the balance of power in the senate and or house.
